Deacon Nick Baumgardner

Transitional Deacon

Office: 262.781.3480, Ext. 243

Deacon Nick comes from a relatively large family; he is the second youngest of seven. Growing up with three brothers and three sisters was a tremendous privilege. Each of his siblings is unique and each of them has taught him something different. Of all his siblings though, his handicapped brother Andy, who is two years his junior, has taught him the most. Andy has taught him that our identity and value as human persons does not consist of what we can do, but in who we are as beloved sons and daughters of God. In the midst of all his limitations, Andy is a joyful, loving, and gentle person.

Deacon Nick had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ when he went to UW-Madison and became involved at St. Paul's on campus. The moment came during a candlelight Mass one Wednesday night. During that Mass, he came to understand Jesus’ true presence in the Holy Eucharist--Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. What was in his head had never before made its way to his heart. This realization is what spurred him to return to the sacrament of reconciliation after a couple years absence. In reconciliation, he came to know that God wanted him to receive His mercy so that Nick could receive Him in the Eucharist worthily.

Another important moment came during Mass at St. Pius X parish in Appleton. When Bishop Ricken of Green Bay was incensing the big crucifix on the wall behind the altar, Nick saw the bishop look at Jesus on the cross, and felt in his heart that he was looking at himself as if in a mirror. In that moment, God gave Nick understanding of the nature of the priesthood as conformity to Christ, particularly Christ on the cross. With this newfound understanding came a desire to share in that priesthood, and an overwhelming sense of peace and joy. This experience was one of the many that helped Deacon Nick in his decision to pursue the priesthood.

Deacon Nick is blessed with an interest in hearing people’s stories. He enjoys walking with others and sharing in the joys and sorrows they communicate. In addition, he is a good baker and a very good eater!

What most impresses Deacon Nick about St. Dominic Catholic Parish is the vibrancy of and level of dedication that people have to the parish community. There are so many ways parishioners can get involved and grow in their faith, and most importantly, they take advantage of them! He has also been impressed by the support he has received from the priests and parish staff, and the great culture of vocations here at St. Dominic.
