Follow the Colorful Feet
With the rise of anxiety and mental health disorders in children, research has indicated that providing avenues for self-regulation and de-escalation are important to have in a learning environment. For many years, the general nature of Catholic schools has, by its nature, provided more calming environments because of its emphasis on prayer and self-discipline. We also offer consistent messaging of peace, love, and mercy. While we absolutely honor the tradition of Catholic education, we can always continue to do more. Throughout the school, we have developed sensory paths for children. These are intentional places within the school where a child can stop and perform a physical activity to re-engage the brain. This does not mean every child, every day, upon passing these places must participate. They are there as a support. Teachers will direct children accordingly as to their purpose. They make us slow down and pay attention and refocus.
