Listen easy, and Hear God Calling
In 1969, Neil Diamond released “And The Grass Won’t Pay No Mind.” In his opening lyric, Diamond crooned “Listen easy, you can hear God calling, Walking barefoot by the stream.” Often in our lives, we are cluttered with physical items or, even more so in the modern day, by distractions that disallow us the ability to hear the voice of God calling to us. According to Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus taught that a person should go into a quiet place where not only can we lift our prayers, especially those that lie in the silence of our own hearts, but to hear God calling us. To hear God moving our minds, hearts, and souls into action and to glorify God in all that we do. Every week, we have the opportunity as a school to not only gather for Mass, but for our greater community to come together for Adoration of Holy Eucharist. I invite each and every one of you to come and spend some silent moments together with the Holy Eucharist and to hear God calling to you. Calling you to action – to be kind, thoughtful, and compassionate to those around you. And to hear God calling you to walk alongside Him as we all strive together to make this world a better place and to help build the Kingdom of God here on Earth.
If you ever feel as though that you cannot hear God softly calling, do what I always do when it seems like I cannot hear the sweet melodies of Neil Diamond – turn up the volume! I promise you that a little extra volume is all you need to hear what God is calling you to be and do. Always remember that everything is possible when we give ourselves fully over to God and trust in His holy plan for each of us. Turn up the volume, listen closely, and, as always, trust in God!
